8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer

8x5 is a free online stopwatch and lap timer that measures time to six decimal places, records and analyzes every lap, saves your history across named sessions with shareable web addresses, and triggers real actions when a target time arrives. The entire 8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer application runs within your browser. Your timing data stays on your device.

The 8x5 timer uses the highest-resolution clock available in modern browsers and displays elapsed time across six decimal places. You choose how many decimal places appear.

At zero decimal places, the display shows a clean minutes-and-seconds readout, well suited for meditation or simple timed tasks. At three decimal places, the display resolves to the millisecond, useful for running splits and interval training. At six decimal places, the full microsecond readout appears, providing maximum detail for precision-critical timing. 8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer uses multiple fonts for accesibility.

Lap Recording and Performance Analysis

Each time you record a lap, 8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer captures two measurements: the duration of that individual lap and the cumulative total time since the stopwatch started. Every recorded lap appears in a list, with the most recent lap at the top.

When you have recorded two or more laps with different durations, 8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer identifies your fastest and slowest laps automatically. Your best lap appears highlighted in green, and your worst lap appears highlighted in red, making your strongest and weakest performances visible at a glance.

Below the lap list, a summary section displays five measurements: total lap count, best lap time, worst lap time, average lap time, and cumulative total time. Reviewing a set of repeat runs, you can see exactly how lap times changed across the sets.

Every Lap Counts, Including Unfinished Ones

When you pause the stopwatch mid-lap, 8x5 preserves the elapsed time for that unfinished segment. The partial lap appears in the lap list with a Paused label and a button that lets you record it as a completed lap if you choose. You decide whether that partial effort joins your recorded lap history.

Named Sessions You Can Bookmark and Share

8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer Sessions give you separate, saved workspaces within the same stopwatch, each preserving its own timing history. You can create a session called Morning Sprints and another called Piano Practice and switch between them freely. Each session preserves its own elapsed time, running or paused status, and complete lap history independently. The default session remains available at all times and cannot be removed.

Every session has its own web address that you can bookmark or share. A session named Morning Sprints has the address 8x5.net/session/morning-sprints. In Italian, the same session appears at 8x5.net/it/session/morning-sprints with the full interface translated. Opening that link brings you directly into that session with all its saved data.

Session cards display the lap count and creation date, so scrolling through your session list shows your accumulated history at a glance. A personal trainer managing five clients can maintain a named session for each one. A teacher running timed drills across three class periods can keep each period separate and compare results afterward.

Actions That Trigger When Your Target Time Arrives

With 8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer, you can set a target time in minutes and seconds. When the stopwatch reaches that time, up to four actions happen at once, each one controllable on its own.

The first action is a screen flash. The entire page pulses with a color you choose. A red flash at the five-minute mark tells a presenter to wrap up, visible even from peripheral vision. The flash can occur at the target time, at each repeating interval, at both, or can be turned off entirely.

The second action is an audible alert. A three-tone chime plays through your device speakers. The sound is generated directly by your browser, so it plays instantly with no loading delay and works even after the internet connection drops. You can set the sound to play at the target time, at each repeating interval, or at both.

The third action is automatic stopping. The stopwatch pauses itself the moment the target time arrives. A sports coach timing a sports team member holding a stretch for exactly sixty seconds can set the target and step away. The stopwatch stops precisely at the defined time.

The fourth action opens a web page. You enter any web address, and 8x5 opens that page in a new tab when the action triggers. This is where the stopwatch becomes a time-triggered automation tool.

Repeating Sound Alerts for Pacing

The 8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer's repeating interval alert works independently from the target time. You enter a number of seconds, and an audible tone plays at that cadence throughout the entire timing session. A sports coach who wants a beep every 30 seconds for pacing gets exactly that, with the interval alert running separately from any target time actions.

Full Visual Customization Across Two Themes

Four separate color controls let you change the timer digit color, the timer background color, the full page background color, and the full page text color. Each color control has its own on-off switch, so you change only the colors you want to change.

Color settings save separately for light theme and dark theme. Your dark theme can display neon green digits on a pure black background while your light theme keeps deep navy digits on warm cream. Switch the theme, and each color set loads automatically. This gives you two completely distinct visual identities, one click apart.

When you set custom colors, a built-in contrast checker evaluates whether your chosen text and background colors are different enough to remain readable. A visible warning identifies any color pair that is too similar, helping you maintain a legible display at all times.

Fourteen Keyboard Shortcuts

Fourteen keyboard shortcuts cover every stopwatch function. Enter toggles start and pause. Space records a lap while the stopwatch is running or starts the timer when idle. Escape resets the stopwatch when paused. F enters fullscreen mode. S scrolls to the settings section. The number 7 toggles between light and dark theme. The number 8 opens a prompt to create a new session.

The number keys 0 through 6 map individual actions: start, stop, lap, pause, and toggle each have a dedicated key. A swim coach standing poolside with a wireless numeric keypad can operate every function with one hand, eyes on the swimmer, without looking at the screen.

Export Lap Data in Four Formats

8x5 offers four ways to export your recorded lap data. You can download a CSV file for spreadsheet analysis, a TSV file for tab-separated workflows, or a plain text file for documentation. You can also copy the full table to your clipboard with one click for pasting into any application.

Each downloaded file carries a descriptive filename that includes your session name and the current date, such as laps-morning-sprints-2026-04-01.csv. The export includes three columns: lap number, individual lap time, and cumulative total time. Every exported time value includes all six decimal places of the original measurement.

8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer Features Complete Privacy by Design

8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer, and the stopwatch, the lap recorder, the session manager, the settings, and the export function all run entirely within your browser on your device. The 8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer server delivers the page when you first load it. After that, zero data travels back.

There are no analytics scripts. There are no tracking pixels. There are no cookies. There is no account system. There is no remote database storing your timing data. The 8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer server has no mechanism to receive, process, or store anything you time.

Your 8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer saved lap records, session names, elapsed times, and custom settings exist exclusively on your device. Clearing your browser data removes them. No server copy exists.

Available in Over 125 Languages

The 8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer language selector opens a searchable list of over 125 languages, each with a product name and description written in that language. Selecting a language brings you to a dedicated address for that language: 8x5.net/it for Italian, 8x5.net/ja for Japanese, 8x5.net/ar for Arabic.

Every interface label, button, status message, keyboard hint, confirmation dialog, and export column header appears in the selected language. Languages that read right-to-left cause the entire interface to mirror its layout accordingly. Each localized page is structured so that search engines can find and serve the correct language version to speakers worldwide.

8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer is Designed for Every Screen

On mobile phones, the 8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer navigation and lap table adjust to fit the narrower screen. On devices held in landscape orientation, the timer and controls resize to fit on a single screen without scrolling. On desktop screens, the layout uses generous spacing and full-size controls. On very large displays and projectors, the timer digits expand to fill the available space.

The 8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer fullscreen button at the top of the page makes the entire page full screen and centers the timer face on a clean background. Combined with custom colors and font selection, these display options make 8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer suitable for a coaching station, a classroom countdown, a livestream overlay, or a personal focus timer.

8x5 Stopwatch and Lap Timer is available at 8x5.net in over 125 languages, with every feature described above ready to use in your next timed session.
